Maynard Drive Family Room Redesign

The furniture in this family room was brought over from a previous house, and the overall design hadn’t been refreshed in over 10 years. When the time came to update the space, the goals were to brighten it and give it a casual, mid-century modern vibe. The honey oak floors and trim are staying for now, and working around the inherently traditional features of the house while trying to make it more modern was one of our biggest design challenges. We introduced some lighter colors with the sofa, chair and ottoman, and the creamy white marble of the coffee table. We went with a box-frame coffee table to help open up the space a bit more. We introduced some darker orange textiles to compliment the honey oak floors and green walls and kept some of the darker wood tones to balance out the orange wood. Then plenty of gold touches were added to both brighten and modernize the space. The gold-foiled gallery wall are maps of places that have a special meaning to the owners.

Later this year the adjoining kitchen will be completely gutted and remodeled, and we will be removing the popcorn ceilings and chair rail. There will surely be some project creep into the family room, so stay tuned!
